It can help you find areas of the body that are not in pain so that you can put your attention there and take a "break" from the painful areas if needed. 

Embodied Centering Meditation

 

This meditation can be used alone, or as a centering before practice. There is an emphasis on coming into the here-and-now by drawing your attention to the senses. Practiced regularly, it may help you to experience present-moment awareness throughout your day.
